About the blog

Hi I am John Muldoon a 11th grader at saline Michigan taking British Literature. My project is the analyzes of what makes video games good at telling story. I chose this project because I have always be fascinated with these interactive programs we call games. Ever since I was a little kid playing Supper Mario Bros I wondered why i was so interested in recusing a princes that I had no personal interest in saving, but as the games professed and I beat more and more bosses getting closer and closer to recusing her I became more attached to saving her and being engrossed in the story of the game. After that game seven years later I started playing role playing games(RPGs) a type of game were the key component of the game is story telling. I began looking deeper into why story telling is a key component in all games and how a game implemented the story.

The Modern RPG

As the technology for producing video games changes, so do the games we play. One category of games that has seen the biggest change is the role-playing games (RPG). An RPG is defined as a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. The first mainstream RPG came out was Dungeon and Dragons (D&D) which came out in 1974 and was based on the premise that you create a character/hero and you make the many choices for your character and alter the game with every decision. After this came to the first evolution to the RPG the 16-bit turn-based combat games where you explore and follow a story set for you by the developers. Then came the first 3d person Daggerfall(1996) RPG that added another dynamic to the category where you could see the story from a perspective of “god”. Then after about 12 years, we get the biggest evolution of the RPG a 3D first-person or 3rd person game where you create the story with your choices fallout 3(2008) created by Bethesda where you play as a vault dweller and go out and explore a radioactive post-American world. Ever since this break throw, we haven’t seen any major changes except for an occasional game that focuses more on improving the graphics of their game.

About Me

My name is John Muldoon I am a 11th grader at Saline High School. I love video games, I have been playing video games since a was five years old and got my first Nintendo DS with the game New Super Mario Bros (2006). From that moment on I could never get enough of them I would by new games every now and then when ever I had enough money. Then at eight years old I bought the game Fossil Fighters (2008 in Japan and 2009 in North America), a game that takes place on a island called Vivosaur where they discovered a way to turn fossils into living dinosaurs and even train them to fight each other. This game was the first video game that caused me to wounder ” why do I enjoy this game”. After that I started playing games that did more than entertain but told a story of how you and the world of the game are intertwine . So to this day I ask my self ” why do I enjoy this game”, and “how does this game tell a story”
